Mark von SponeckA message from Global Nomads Group's Executive Director

Dear Friend,

Margaret Mead, the world renowned anthropologist, worked to create bridges between cultures, to prove that there were more commonalities than differences between them, but more so, that each culture had something unique and important to offer the world. Indeed, her work has illustrated that humanity’s diversity is not a handicap, but rather an incredible asset of distinctive knowledge and experiences just waiting to be tapped.

She is perhaps best known for this quote:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Margaret MeadWe at Global Nomads Group have always held that quote, and the ideology of Mead, close to our hearts and minds. Like Mead, GNG has a heartfelt belief in the interconnectedness of humanity, and our work daily substantiates this belief. Founded in 1998, our mission is to foster dialogue and understanding among the world's youth and to serve as a vehicle for awareness, bridging the boundaries of cultural misconception and instilling in the participants of our educational programs a heightened appreciation and comprehension of the world in which we live. Using interactive technologies such as videoconferencing, we bring young people together face-to-face to meet across cultural and national boundaries to discuss their differences & similarities, and the world issues that affect them.

Since the tragic events of 9/11, our mission has become ever-increasingly vital. One of the consequences of that day is that cross-cultural, international understanding is in serious jeopardy. As terrorism continues to spread across the globe, people are becoming increasingly insulated, terrified to look beyond the borders of their city, their state, their country for fear of what may happen.

We at Global Nomads Group feel that this reaction, while understandable, is also precisely the very opposite of what should be happening. The world is growing smaller and more interconnected by the day. Understanding of other cultures, other people, is and will be increasingly crucial to ensuring a more peaceful and secure future for our world.

That is why the work that GNG is doing is so vital, because through our programs the young people of the world are able to commune with their peers, thousands of miles away, and begin to foster understanding through dialogue. How much smaller and more fragile the world seems when you have friends in other countries - when you begin to understand the cultures of countries worlds away from your own.

Do you believe that a better, more secure world is achievable through cross cultural understanding? Then JOIN with GNG as we offer today’s young people a window to the world – to see and experience places and people they may never have had a chance to visit on their own and create a more informed and aware global citizenry for our future. We need your support!
