About Rwanda
On one hand it is a nature lover's paradise. Its proximity to the equator combined with its elevation make for lush, spring like conditions year-round. Rwanda 's wildlife includes elephants, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, wild boars, leopards, antelopes, and flying lemurs. There are active volcanoes in Rwanda 's Virunga Mountains , which are home to Rwanda 's crown jewel—half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. But on the other hand, its people have had to endure hell. The Tutsi and Hutu tribes have quarreled for years in a battle to control Rwanda. In 1994, the struggle culminated with a genocide in which 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus were slaughtered. To make matters worse, today Rwandans are faced with an HIV/AIDS epidemic that has infected 10% of its population.
