In honor of International Women's Day on March 8, 2009, GNG will be celebrating the remarkable achievements of women worldwide all week long!  Students will study a series of women who have taken exquisite leadership in their communities by learning how they are changing and shaping our world!  

CAREIn addition, in partnership with CARE, we will celebrate International Women's Day through viewing a documentary called A Powerful Noise the evening of March 5th (details to follow for those schools who sign up).  On March 6th,  students will have the unique opportunity to speak with an individual involved with the making of this documentary.

Katherine O'Hearn, Executive Director - ABC News

Kathy O'Hearn has one of the most diverse resumes in television news with experience that truly spans the broadcasting spectrum. She was one of the first women to carry a camera in the field for CBS News, and rose to the top of the executive ranks where she directed worldwide network television news coverage.

The awards for her work include five Emmy awards, three Edward R. Murrow awards, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Political Journalism in 2007, a 2000 National Headliner Award for Best Newscast, an Overseas Press Club Award in 1999, and a Peabody Award in 1999.

Patricia Ellis, President - Women's Foreign Policy Group

Patricia Ellis is President and Co-Founder of the Women's Foreign Policy Group. She previously was a foreign affairs reporter and producer for the MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour from 1975-1987 and a producer in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Washington bureau from 1988-1992.

Ms. Ellis is a founding board member of the International Women's Media Foundation, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Chiefs (heads of foreign policy non-profits), and the Cosmos Club. She previously served on the boards of Women's Edge, The Overseas Education Fund International and the advisory boards of The Public Diplomacy Foundation, Main Street America and the Third World.

Tom Cappello, Director - A Powerful Noise
Scott Thigpen, Producer - A Powerful Noise

Tom Cappello is a writer, producer and director in the world of documentary film and television. Cappello served as supervising producer on The History Channel series Deep Sea Detectives, and wrote and directed multiple episodes. Upon completion of the series, he produced National Geographic Explorer: Super Sub. Subsequently, Cappello wrote and field produced an episode entitled Home Base about the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., for the Public Television series Great Museums. Cappello began his career at Turner Entertainment producing commercial and interactive television for TNT, TBS, The Cartoon Network and Turner Sports.

Scott Thigpen For 15 years, Scott Thigpen has traveled the globe producing stories about its people and cultures. His work has garnered nearly four-dozen international awards and film festival selections. Thigpen's programs have aired on ABC, NBC, PBS, Australian Broadcasting Corp., NHK, Al Jazeera, and featured at The Smithsonian Institution and U.S. State Department. Focusing on humanitarian issues, Thigpen has produced projects for the International Trachoma Initiative, CARE, the Captain Planet Foundation, and he co-produced and edited the Emmy Award-winning Holocaust documentary Burning Questions. Most recently, Thigpen wrote, produced and directed The Last Child which aired on PBS stations nationwide.
