In April of 2007, a tragic shooting at Virginia Tech left 33 dead and an entire nation in shock. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, an estimated 1.5 million students aged 12-18 were victims of crime at school in 2005 in the United States. Seventeen students were killed by violence in school that same year.

While many statistics cite a decline in school and youth violence during the past decade, high-profile events such as the massacre at Virginia Tech continue to force the issue of guns and school violence into the limelight, causing many to re-examine our school culture, our small arms policy, and our media coverage of violence.

Students from around the country will gather in this two-part series to discuss these pressing issues, share their experiences, and deliberate what they see for the future of school violence.  Students will also discuss the nature of gun and school violence in relation to the rest of the world: Is this problem uniquely American?

Tuesday, April 15: Students gather in groups of up to three classes to discuss the underlying causes and the consequences of violence in schools.  This session is moderated by a GNG staff member.

Available time slots:
Middle School: 11 am – 12 pm (EST)
High School: 9 – 10 am | 1 – 2 pm (EST)

Thursday, April 17: In this follow-up session, students can direct their questions and comments to Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Mr. Helmke will discuss the issue of violence in our schools and what can be done about it.

Available time slots:
Middle and High: 9 – 10 am | 11 am – 12 pm (EST)
