More than a year after the racially-charged controversy of the Jena Six in Louisiana and decades after the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., students gather to talk openly about racism now. Classes from all over the country will discuss their experiences with or without racism, of all kinds, in their communities and how these compare to media coverage on race relations. Discussion centers around this crucial question: What is the status of racism today?

In this two-part series, students have the opportunity to hear what their peers in far-away places have to say about whether therefs discrimination in their community and, if so, what form it takes. They also have the chance to direct their questions to Jennifer Holladay of the Southern Poverty Law Center, an internationally known civil rights firm at the forefront of tolerance education.

Tuesday, January 29: Up to three classes at a time connect to discuss the issue of racism in relation to various groups of people.  Students talk about their personal and observed experiences and, working together, examine ways to improve race relations.  This session is moderated by a GNG staff member.

Available time slots:
Middle School: 11 am – 12 pm (EST)
High School: 9 – 10 am | 1 - 2 pm (EST)

Thursday, January 31:Students gather in larger groups to interact with Jennifer Holladay, Senior Advisor for Strategic Affairs and the Former Director of Teaching Tolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center.  They have the opportunity to discuss racism today and learn about ways people are working to combat it from a leading expert.  This session is held in a Q&A format.

Available time slots:   Middle and High: 9 – 10 am | 11 am -12 pm (EST)
