The PULSE: Racism NOW
Date: Tuesday, January 29 and Thursday, January 31 More than a year after the racially-charged controversy of the Jena Six in Louisiana and decades after the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S., students gather to talk openly about racism now. Classes from all over the country will discuss their experiences with or without racism, of all kinds, in their communities and how these compare to media coverage on race relations. Discussion centers around this crucial question: What is the status of racism today? In this two-part series, students have the opportunity to hear what their peers in far-away places have to say about whether therefs discrimination in their community and, if so, what form it takes. They also have the chance to direct their questions to Jennifer Holladay of the Southern Poverty Law Center, an internationally known civil rights firm at the forefront of tolerance education.
