For more than a century, genocides have horrified the entire world…again and again. Even after the approval of the Genocide Convention by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, the international community has struggled to overcome the challenges presented by genocides.

In this series, students gather face-to-face to examine the pressing issues of genocide: the causes, the consequences, and the entire world’s role. Students will have the opportunity to look particularly closely into the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and then ask questions of Ingrid, a survivor of the genocide. Ingrid first participated in GNG’s programs in 2004 from Rwanda for the videoconference series-turned-documentary Rwanda Alive. In the fall of 2007, Ingrid was accepted into Stanford and will be joining students nationwide from California to tell her story.

Tuesday, April 8: In this videoconference, students discuss genocide as a whole and what the role of the international community has been and should be.  Students are invited to address any of the many genocides that have occurred in the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular emphasis on Rwanda.

Available time slots:
Middle School: 11 am – 12 pm (EST)
High School: 9 – 10 am | 1 – 2 pm (EST)
College: 3 – 4 pm (EST)

Thursday, April 10: This follow-up videoconference provides students with the opportunity to ask questions of Ingrid, a survivor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and come to a better understanding of the effects, both on a personal and international scale, of genocide.

Available time slots:
Middle and High: 9 – 10 am | 11 am – 12 pm (EST)
College: 1 – 2 pm (EST)
