  • 1 billion people do not have access to safe and affordable drinking water.
  • 4 million people in developing countries die each year due to waterborne diseases.
  • 2 million of those cases are children who die of diarrhea.
  • Polluted water contributes to the death of an average of 15 million children yearly.
  • If current overuse of water continues, three quarters of the world’s accessible freshwater will be used by 2025.

Access to clean water is essential to survival. Think about all the ways you use water: drinking, cooking, brushing your teeth, using the restroom, agriculture, recreation, bathing, and more. Do you know where your water comes from? Water is something many people take for granted. But in certain developing countries and in some parts of the United States, people do not have access to safe water due to inadequate usage, water rights, droughts, urbanization, and other factors.

In these videoconferences students come together to discuss the causes of this global crisis, what is being done to address it, and what more can be done. We will look at specific global communities in which water is inaccessible to the majority of the population and examine its effects on the environment and the people, both locally and globally. Working with their peers around North America, students will also discuss ways to create a broader supply of safe water worldwide.

Tuesday, March 11: In groups of up to three classes, students will discuss the root of the crisis of accessible clean water and the national and international responses to the issue.  This session is moderated by a GNG staff member.
