Virtual Classrooms from Antarctica
Dates: October 14 - November 25,
dates vary Today, the climate is changing faster than any time of the last 65 million years. Warmer ocean temperatures are feeding more powerful hurricanes, while mega heat waves and droughts are occurring in record numbers. In partnership with The Offshore New Harbor Project (which is part of the Antarctic Geological Drilling Program), GNG will host a series of Virtual Classrooms from Antarctica from October through December to study evidence in Antarctica from the last time carbon dioxide levels were this high — 34 million years ago! By examining our world's past, we hope to get a glimpse of our future, as global warming has become an inevitable reality. Every other week, students will connect directly to a scientist on the ground in Antarctica to discuss a different topic relating to changes in the environment. By speaking with their peers and with experts in climate history, students will gain a greater understanding of the cycles of Planet Earth and be better equipped to tackle problems of the environment that face us now. For those who are interested in serious engagement and can give a high level of commitment, we welcome you to join our inner-circle. This will be an intense six week session where we will join dynamic 8th grade science teacher from Harlem, NYC - Shakira Brown - to learn straight from the ice! As a part of the inner circle, you will receive additional material and curriculum. These sessions will take place every Tuesday, 10-11 AM ET or 11:30-12:30 PM ET, beginning Tuesday, October 14.For those who are interested but cannot give a high level of commitment, we invite you to join us in our Thursday VCs. We will be speaking with scientific experts in the field (many of whom went to Antarctica themselves!) as we discuss about different topics related to climate change and Antarctica. These sessions will be held every Thursday at 8:30 AM ET, beginning Thursday, October 16. Audio conferences will also be made possible through US Satellite at 2 PM and 9 PM. 2 PM conferences are open to your classroom- The same lesson plan will be available every Wednesday. Thus, you will only need to sign up for one Audio Conference throughout the 6 weeks. There is a $25 training fee. The 9 PM session is a teacher development training from Shakira Brown. Mention GNG and the $12 training fee will be waived.
