Recent media attention has clearly exposed the link between our reliance on natural resources, such as oil, and the environmental damage this need can inflict on the planet. As one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide (surpassed only recently by China), the United States is clearly part of the problem. The question we ask today is: What – if anything - should the U.S. do about it?

In this videoconference series, we will consider global environmental issues and discuss the role of the United States in addressing them. The goal is for students to develop their own "ideal" Global Environmental policy.  Students will prepare for the videoconferences using the Choices for the 21st Century Education Program lesson plan Global Environment: Considering US Policy.

Wednesday, November 7: Up to three classes at a time come together through videoconferencing and discuss the major global environmental issues that they feel need to be addressed. They then express their thoughts on the role the U.S. should play in addressing these issues. This informal round table conversation will be moderated by a GNG staff member.

Available time slots: 9–10 am | 11 am–12 pm | 1–2 pm (EST)

Thursday, November 8:Up to five classes at a time interact with an expert in environmental policy.  The expert opens the conference with a brief exposé of global environmental challenges then answers students’ questions directly.  Past guest speakers include Yerina Mugica of the National Resources Defense Council.

Time slots:  9–10 am | 11 am–12 pm (EST)
