THE PULSE: Islam and the US

In the heat of international struggles regarding cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad being published, this videoconferencing series in February, 2006, addressed what some people are calling the "clash between Islam and the West" and particularly, the United States. It consisted of two parts:

I. What do we know about Islam? – 50 minutes
3 interactive schools discussed what they knew about Islam and debated how this religion is perceived in the US.

Recommended reading: Preparatory lesson plan on Islam (Discovery Channel)

Watch: Political cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad against Islamic law controversy across the(PBS)

II. Discussing the Principles of Islam with Ahmed Younis (Muslim Public Affairs Council) – 50 minutes
The second session featured special guest Ahmed Younis, who was eagerly invited back after the success of his videoconference on the same subject last year.

A graduate of Washington & Lee School of Law, Younis is the Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council and author of the book American Muslims: Voire Dire (Speak the Truth), a post-September 11 look into the reality of debate surrounding American Muslims and their country. Younis connected with four interactive schools to discuss Islam and answer questions.
