With glimmers of hope of global economic recovery, global stock and credit markets have somewhat recovered. However, there is a raging debate on whether there is real economic recovery or a government-engineered temporary reprieve from the unprecedented economic crisis the world has faced over the past twelve months. What really happened? How did some of the supposedly most sound and stable financial systems come crashing down? What is at the heart of some of the largest U.S. corporate bankruptcies and demise of such icons as Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and General Motors? What happens next?

In this exciting interactive project-based session (with a lesson plan designed in partnership with the Buck Institute for Education) students examine the global economic crisis on Day One, and discuss macroeconomics with a Wall Street professional to understand how the world has been impacted on Day Two. The session will help young students to begin to appreciate the complexities and challenges of modern global financial systems and how they are directly and indirectly impacted as they chart their own course in such money matters.

Guest Speaker: Roger Phillips
Roger Phillips is Manager at American International Group's (AIG) Corporate Treasury where he oversees capital adequacy issues for worldwide insurance and banking subsidiaries of AIG. As a result of recent government intervention, Roger's role also includes oversight of global funding requirements for diverse businesses and formulating key strategies for businesses in a challenging global economic environment.

Prior to joining AIG, Roger served as Senior Treasury Analyst at General Motors, New York Treasurer's Office where he managed key relationships with Rating Agencies and also managed GM's liquidity and capital. He worked on GM's 2007 landmark negotiations with the UAW and on critical turnaround strategies for GM.

During his financial career, Roger has been involved in a broad range of capital markets issues that range from Sales & Trading to Debt Capital Markets.

Roger holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from Kanpur University, India, a Master of Science degree from University of Saskatchewan, Canada and a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University, New York.
