FALL PROGRAM TYPES
- 2–Part Pulse: Two-part, virtual, town hall meetings designed to give students a forum to deliberate some of the most challenging issues of our time. Students meet over a period of two days.
- Rapid Response: On-the-ground emergency response from global “hot spots” such as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the post-election crisis in Kenya. Student participation dates vary.
- Innovations: Unique videoconference programs ranging from virtual field trips, multi-part series, to project-based videoconferences. Programs can include virtual science expeditions and on-going international student exchange programs. Student participation dates vary.
- Currents: Travel around the globe with us as GNG hops on board the Semester at Sea ship. Student participation dates vary.

2-PART PULSE PROGRAMS
TITLE: Darfur Debate
The conflict in Darfur has reached well into its fifth year as hundreds of thousands of Darfuris have been killed and millions more have been displaced. How can this atrocity still continue despite the rallying cry against genocide heard around the world? In this 2-part series, GNG will explore the roots of this conflict and what students can do NOW to influence the outcome of the 21st century’s first genocide.

TITLE: Environmental Refugees: The Aftermath of Climate Change
Reports have recently emerged of the first full-country population displacement due to climate change. In this 2-part Pulse program, students will examine the effects of global warming and its relationship to a new wave of refugees known as "environmental refugees."

TITLE: Conflict Minerals - The DRC
Since 1998, more than 5.4 million men, women, and children have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily due to the consequences of its ongoing civil war. In this special two-part RAPID RESPONSE series, students will be introduced to the challenges facing the DRC and learn to identify the root causes of its conflict and the humanitarian and environmental issues as a result of it. In addition, students will learn to celebrate the history and culture of the DRC and identify the ways to bring hope to its future.

TITLE: Money Matters: The Global Economic Crisis: Putting Stock in the Markets?
Project-Based Learning Lesson Plan. Offered only for grades 9-12 (high school level).
With glimmers of hope of global economic recovery, global stock and credit markets have somewhat recovered. However, there is a raging debate on whether there is real economic recovery or a government-engineered temporary reprieve from the unprecedented economic crisis the world has faced over the past twelve months. In this exciting interactive project-based session, students examine the global economic crisis and discuss macroeconomics with a Wall Street professional to understand how the world has been impacted.

RAPID RESPONSE
TITLE: Nuclear Proliferation: A Case Study of North Korea
The world has taken steps towards global disarmament - though encountering challenges along the way - since the signing of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968. In this two-part series, students will analyze the debates over nuclear proliferation on Day One, and learn about how North Korea’s nuclear arms decisions will affect the new global order via a conversation with a guest expert on the topic on Day Two.

TITLE: Domestic Violence: Global Perspectives – In Honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
According to the American Institute of Domestic Violence, over $5.8 billion is spent each year to care for U.S. victims of domestic violence; 95% of whom are female. What can be done to stop the cycle of violence before it even begins? Students will become familiar with the various definitions of domestic violence and will talk to a guest expert who is well versed in the topic of domestic violence.

TITLE: U.S.’ Role in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan (Commemorating Veteran’s Day on November 11th)
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq have become staples in our daily headlines. In this one hour special RAPID RESPONSE program, students will learn about the challenges facing this region of the world and determine what they might think is the best course of action as we look at the U.S.' roles in these regions of the world through the eyes of a guest expert who has worked in the "trenches."

TITLE: Inventing the Future
Global Nomads Group has teamed up with the Cloud Institute to challenge students to become future leaders of a sustainable global community. In this unique seven-part program series, students from across North America will gather together with experts every other week via live videoconferences to discuss the multifaceted concepts of “community” and “citizenship.” Students will also share their perspectives as members of a locally and globally interconnected community, and reflect upon the roles and responsibilities tied to their exclusive memberships.

TITLE: Cool Careers: Monthly Spotlight
Ever wondered who creates your favorite ice cream flavor? Or who designs your favorite hoodie? Who dreams up the storyline for the latest box office hit? Or who feeds the tigers after the zoo is closed to the public? In this 4-Part Innovations series, GNG will go off the beaten path of the typical 9-5 desk job and look into unique careers for students to explore.

TITLE: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Virtual Science Shipboard Expedition: Exploring Global Sea Change Levels
In November 2009, an international team of scientists will spend two months at sea aboard the IODP research drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution collecting and analyzing geological data to investigate the history of global sea level change over the last 30 million years. Every week for a total of six sessions, students will connect live with a schoolteacher who will be working with the scientists on the ship to discuss a different topic relating to global sea change.

TITLE: International Education Week: Creating a Vision for a Better Future
Harnessing the momentum from past Global Nomads Group [GNG] videoconferences, including the Global Election Watch Series, GNG invites youth around the world in a live, videoconference program to discuss their perspectives and visions of a better collective future. Youth will have the opportunity to compare and contrast their visions, how to achieve a better future, who are the key stakeholders and players, and how they can work together as global citizens towards a more interconnected world.

TITLE: World AIDS Day 2009 Special Event: A Conversation with the Makers of: Where the Water Meets the Sky: Film for Education & Social Change
Bringing the developing world into your classroom, "Where the Water Meets the Sky" tells the inspiring story of 23 women from rural Zambia who are trained in filmmaking. This courageous group has produced a film about an issue that no one will discuss: the plight of young women orphaned by AIDS.

TITLE: Folktales around the World: The Fish that were Too Clever
Project-Based Learning Lesson Plan. Offered only for grades 3-5.
In partnership with the Buck Institute for Education, leaders in project-based learning methodology and pedagogy, GNG introduces a new videoconference program for grades 3-5 that focuses on project-based learning with the videoconference as the culminating project. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the folktales’ significance to the country of origin and to their own personal lives or local community. In groups, students will prepare mini-presentations to showcase during a culminating videoconference project.

CURRENTS
TITLE: CURRENTS: Globalization and the Post-American / Flat World
CURRENTS is a joint project of Semester at Sea (SAS) and Global Nomads Group (GNG). From September – December 2009, SAS will embark on its historic 100th voyage. During this exciting shipboard expedition, GNG and SAS will
collaborate to produce a series of documentaries as well as live, open
dialogue videoconferences between schools in the United States and schools
and cultural sites around the world. Nations involved will include Spain,
Morocco, Ghana, South Africa, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China.
