Gossiping Globally: Jordan and American Girls Schedule High Tech Gabfest at the Women's Museum

September 24, 2000 -- Dallas -- Global Nomads Group (GNG), in partnership with The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future announces the launch of their joint International videoconference series. Global Connections will bring together American and Jordanian women and girls for an interactive, cross-cultural dialogue in October 2000.

In three ninety-minute discussions, mothers and girls of both countries will have the opportunity to learn from and about each other through direct dialogue. The first videoconference takes place Thursday, October 12th 2000 at 9 AM CST. Participants will include a group of 20 Dallas girls between the ages of 11 to 14, who will speak live to their counterparts in Amman, Jordan. A more in-depth follow-up session between the girls is slated for October 16th.

In conjunction with the girls' conference, groups of mothers from both countries will assemble at The Women's Museum on October 14th via video teleconferencing for a live broadcast to compare and contrast parenting styles in the US and Jordan. Mothers from around the United States can participate in the event and ask questions by logging on to Moms Online on Oxygen, part of Oxygen Media (www.oxygen.com). With its current base of 22 million users worldwide, Oxygen will enable mothers not directly involved in the conferences to ask questions to the participants and learn more about the differences and similarities between these two cultures.

The project began when Global Nomads Group received an invitation earlier this year from His Royal Highness Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan to implement a global distance-learning curriculum in his country. "We are happy to see several organizations working collectively, sharing their individual expertise and resources, with the aim of making this cultural project work" said Chris Plutte, founder/director, Global Nomads Group. Candace O'Keefe, executive director, The Women's Museum stated "The Jordanian project showcases how our interactive live teleconferencing capabilities can educate girls and women beyond the walls of the Museum and the boundaries of the United States."

Global Nomads Group was founded in 1998 by Mark von Sponeck, Jonathan Giesen and Christopher Plutte, and is devoted to using new technologies to promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. Since its inception, GNG has established partnerships and collaborations with numerous organizations to provide children with enriching and lasting educational experiences.

The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future, in association with The Smithsonian Institution, is the nation's first comprehensive women's history museum. Scheduled to open September 29, 2000 the museum chronicles the lives of American women in a way that has never before been seen.

Oxygen Media is an integrated media brand that superserves modern women by combining the best qualities of the Internet and cable television. Founded in 1998 by Geraldine Laybourne, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner, Caryn Mandabach and Oprah Winfrey, Oxygen consists of a growing network of popular Web sites located at www.oxygen.com and a 24-hour cable network.
