GNG TEAMS UP WITH EDC AT THE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SUMMIT

GNG Interviews World Leaders And Youth Delegates For New Documentary

September 12, 2002 - Alexandria, Egypt - Global Nomads Group (GNG) today finished the first part of a collaboration with the Education Development Center (EDC) at the newly constructed Alexandria Library in Egypt. The project is centered on EDC's Youth Employment Summit (YES) (www.youthemploymentsummit.org) in which over 2000 foreign ministers and youth delegates participated to discuss social entrepreneurship. The co-chairs of the event were H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of the Arab Republic of Egypt and Hon. William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States.

YES is launching a Decade Campaign of Action, so that an additional 500 million young adults, especially youth facing poverty, will have productive and sustainable livelihoods by year 2012. Through YES' Global Alliance members, EDC anticipates a strong movement for the achievement of this vision. YES2002 was a platform for youth and diverse stakeholders to come together in the spirit of partnership and collaboration as members of the Global Alliance for Youth Employment to secure productive and sustainable livelihoods for the youth of the world. Moving forward, YES2002 sets the stage for promoting intergenerational dialogue, participation and decision-making for youth employment and other global issues related to it.

"We believe the issue of sustainable livelihoods is critical for global youth and policy-makers to discuss and also makes it a particularly relevant subject for cross-cultural exchanges," said Mark von Sponeck, GNG's Director of International Relations.

GNG captured video interviews with VIP's and youth delegates for a documentary to be created on the Summit. In parallel, GNG will repurpose the content for viewing before school-to-school exchanges in which students will explore the meaning of livelihood around the world and collaborate on entrepreneurial projects together.

The event was also an opportunity for GNG to interview such figures as José-Maria Figueres, former president of Costa Rica, and Ismail Serageldin, Special Advisor to the World Bank and Director-General, Library of Alexandria, on the importance of cross-cultural exchanges and global education.

About EDC

With more than 325 projects around the globe, EDC is one of the world's leading nonprofit education and health organizations. They bring researchers and practitioners together to create tools and conditions for learning, reaching people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. EDC attaches a broad and inclusive definition to the word "education." EDC's view of education is not bound by the walls of a school or university or focused only on children and young adults. Instead, projects reach around the world and across the lifespan-from early childhood development to professional development and job training, from elementary school science and mathematics to adult literacy.

In addition to designing curricula and other educational tools and systems, EDC works to improve the conditions for learning. EDC manages projects focusing on nutrition, environmental protection, substance abuse, and injury, violence, and disease prevention. They collaborate with communities, institutions, and governments to create environments in which ongoing learning is valued and nurtured.
