December 14, 2002 IRAQI CRISIS: AMERICAN YOUTH DISCUSS THE OPTIONS High school students in Nebraska and Connecticut share their views through videoconferencing New York (December 14, 2002) -- As America prepares for war, there is an ongoing debate both here and abroad about U.S. policy toward Iraq and its leader Saddam Hussein. What are U.S. high school students thinking about the Iraqi crisis? Do students on the U.S. east coast share similar or different opinions on the crisis from their peers in the nation's midsection? The Global Nomads Group (GNG) wants to know. On Monday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m. CT, GNG will host a dialogue between students in two classrooms in very different parts of the United States: Bloomfield, Connecticut, and Omaha, Nebraska. Using the Choices Program's "Teaching with the News: Crisis with Iraq" lesson plan (www.choices.edu/iraq/) as the basis for discussion, GNG aims to awaken students' civic interest in a topic unfolding before them in the news, enable them to engage with students and communities in a different location, and empower them to articulate their views on the debate at hand. A nonprofit supported by several UN agencies, the Global Nomads Group is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to heightening children's understanding of, and appreciation for, the world and its people through dialogue with their peers. Using a combination of live remote broadcasting and videoconferencing, GNG's projects bring youth together to discuss the issues that affect and unite us all. |
