ACROSS THE NATION, STUDENTS CONNECT TO DISCUSS IMMIGRATION
NEW YORK (October 9, 2006) - In the days just following President
Bush’s signature on the new Homeland Security Bill, and the allocation
of $1.2 million dollars towards the building of border fences on the United
State’s border with Mexico, the heated debate over immigration issues
is sure to intensify. On Tuesday, October 10th, students will be given the opportunity
to discuss this debate and express their opinions in a dialogue with their peers
across the nation. To facilitate this discussion, Global Nomads Group and Polycom
Video Systems will be hosting a videoconference to link students from five middle
and high schools in The Immigration Debate.
The first session of this two-day conference will provide students the opportunity
to communicate with their peers nation-wide to generate ideas and perspectives
on the issue of immigration. They will be brainstorming what they know about
these issues and discussing the future of the immigration debate as it pertains
to domestic policy, citizenship, human rights, and international relations.
The dialogue will be moderated by Global Nomads Group co-founder David Macquart
on October 10th at 9 a,m., 11 a.m. 1 p.m and 3 p.m. EST.
On October 12th students will have the opportunity to continue this conversation
and hear from Tom Shea, an expert on immigration issues from the New York Immigrant
Coalition. Mr. Shea will discuss immigrant rights and give an overview of the
main points framing the debate on immigration policy. The NYIC is an umbrella
organization involved in policy and advocacy for immigrants and refugees both
locally and nationally. Since 1987 they have worked to provide community education
and training for immigrants and refugees, and have served as an advocate and
policy analyst on immigrant issues.
Global Nomads Group (GNG) is a New York-based nonprofit that provides schools
with a window to the world using live videoconferencing and broadcasting. The
Immigration Issue is part of GNG’s program, The PULSE, which connects
youth around the U.S. for discussions on the important world issues of our time.
The program aims to encourage civic engagement and to promote young people's
interest and knowledge of international affairs. In addition to class-to-class
discussions, The PULSE "Speaker Series" enables young people to hear
from, and speak directly to, renowned experts on a variety of international
issues.
