CURRENTS
HIV/AIDS Around the World - September 2005

Videoconferences

Live videoconferences are at the heart of this exciting collaboration between Semester at Sea and GNG. The videoconferences allow us to put down our textbooks and discuss, eye-to-eye, our world and the challenges it faces.

Classes can participate as either Ambassador or View-Only Schools. An Ambassador School is fully interactive, meaning that your students will have the ability to hear and speak with their counterparts in "host" countries.

As an Ambassador School you:

* Participate in fully interactive videoconferences, meaning that your students will have the ability to hear and speak with their counterparts in "host" countries.
* Can get your questions answered directly from the source: students and experts in the countries we visit.
* Can access supplementary material via the CURRENTS website.

As a View-Only School you:

* Can dial into and view exciting broadcasts, conducted live from the field (no direct participation).
* Can get your questions answered directly from the source: students and experts in the countries we visit via the web.
* Can access supplementary material via the CURRENTS website.

There will be three videoconferences per country:

1st conference: Culture Exchange

The first videoconference is designed to explore one another's cultures. Each Ambassador School will be asked to share their community through music, video, dance. Following the introductions we will allow a significant amount of time for an open questions and answers period.

2nd conference: HIV/AIDS

The second conference is an examination of the global effects of HIV/AIDS. Most of these conferences will be brought to you via satellite from a remote location (i.e. community center, HIV/AIDS orphanage, drug distribution center). Discussions will center on a variety of issues related to this epidemic: the social stigma of HIV/AIDS, prevention, and its economic effects.

3rd conference: Take Action

The third and final conference in each country will be a chance to finish previous discussions on Culture and HIV/AIDS and also begin discovering how participants of this program can collaborate and help fight the spread of HIV/AIDS.
