CURRENTS
HIV/AIDS Around the World - September 2005

More about CURRENTS

During the fall of 2005, Global Nomads Group and Semester at Sea proudly presented CURRENTS, an international education program uniting American youth with their peers around the world via videoconferencing and the Internet, to discuss the most pressing global issues of the time and work together to help solve them.

Over the course of 3 months, we explored 9 different countries on 3 continents! Students were able to experience the world like never before through videoconferencing, web logs, “webumentaries” (short video clips) and an interactive website (this one).

The FALL 2005 topic for CURRENTS was the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it was unfolding in countries around the world.

Videoconferencing and this website were the core components of this program. American students were able to meet up (via videoconference, remote broadcast and the internet) with their peers in countries around the globe for a cross-cultural examination of HIV/AIDS and to discover ways in which youth are, and can be, involved in fighting this disease.

Program participants explored obstacles to access for generic drugs in India, learned about the life of HIV/AIDS orphans in Kenya, were introduced to an HIV positive Sesame Street character in South Africa and discussed Brazil’s unique approach to combating the virus, giving them a well-rounded understanding of this worldwide crisis.

Further, and perhaps more importantly, they developed friendships with their international peers.

Those relationships have formed the basis of a pro-active youth response to the crisis.
