Nairobi is a modern, attractive city with a cluster of steel and glass towers and streets lined with colorful bougainvillea, frangipani, and jacaranda trees. Few visitors see the slums where the new immigrants live, although beggars are not an uncommon sight in downtown Nairobi. The Parliament and Kenyatta Conference Center are the most important official edifices. The colorful City Market, Jamia mosque, and the Memorial to President Kenyatta are also worth a visit.

The National Museum is a must. It contains several superb collections exhibiting the natural and cultural wealth of the country. The museum is a leading research institution in the field of human origins. The exhibits that document human origin in East Africa are fascinating. Other exhibits include an ethnological collection of tools, weapons, and typical artifacts from Kenya's numerous tribes; a collection of Joy Adamson paintings; stuffed animals in habitat dioramas; and a life-sized model of Ahmed, the great bull elephant who was named as a living national monument. Adjacent to the museum is Nairobi Snake Park with an excellent collection of reptiles.

The Carnivore Restaurant with its feast of grilled meats (including exotic game), the Karen Blixen house and museum, and Nairobi National Park are other points of interest in Nairobi. Located within sight of the skyscrapers of Nairobi, the city's National Park has a surprisingly large variety of wildlife including gazelle, giraffe, zebra, hartebeest, eland, warthog, ostrich, rhino, cheetah, monkey, baboon, and impala.
