HIV/AIDS Around the World - September 2005

Q: My school doesn’t have videoconferencing. How can my class participate
A: You’d be surprised by the number of public videoconferencing rooms out there. Check out the yellow pages for your town or city and you just might be able to use facilities close by at a very cheap rate. Another alternative is to request sponsorship from a local company with a videoconferencing setup.

Also, don’t forget, the broadcasts are only part of the program! This website will be jam-packed with free educational content! Webumentaries, country profiles, pictures, blog entries from the field, live chats with experts...these are a few of the things you'll find here, so come back soon to check it out!

Q: Why are you focusing on HIV/AIDS for this particular program?
A: HIV/AIDS is a truly global epidemic. From the streets of New York, to the rice paddies of Thailand, the disease is everywhere. The differences from country to country are related to the perception of the disease, prevention education, access to medicine, and so on…We have set out to do something unique: to cover as many countries as possible in one semester (9) and explore these differences. Through this educational journey, we hope to convey how the world is coping with this health disaster and offer students a unique understanding of its scope.

Q: I already participate in Semester at Sea’s Vicarious Voyage Program. Am I required to now do this?
A: No, this program is not mandatory, though complimentary. Vicarious Voyage participants are not required to take part in the program.

Q: Can I be an Ambassador School for more than one country?
A: In order to allow as many schools as possible to participate as Ambassador Schools, we are limiting individual schools' participation to one country.

Q: What time will the conferences start at?
A: Given that we will be broadcasting from different places across the globe, it will be a challenge to ensure that they all take place at the same time (because of different time zones). The exact times will be determined the closer we get to the launch date.

Q: Do I have to pay for international network charges for the videoconference?
A: No, we will be using a videoconferencing bridge here in the US, which your class will be required to dial into. You will therefore incur a national network charge, NOT an international charge.

Q: We would like to participate, but we can’t because of the HIV/AIDS topic, are there any alternatives?
A: We understand that for some schools, the subject of HIV/AIDS may be difficult to approach in class. As an alternative, we recommend that your class take part in either of the first conferences in each country (there will be three conferences per country), which will deal with culture and act as an introduction to the country we will be visiting.

Also, keep in mind that this website will be filled with information about the countries we will be visiting (ideal background for a social studies, or geography class).

Q: How long is each video conference?
A: Each videoconference will last approximately 60 minutes.

Q: How is one chosen to be an Ambassador School?
A: Ambassador schools are chosen on a first-come, first-served basis, based upon the interest level and commitment of the facilitator. For this program, we have 27 Ambassador School slots available. Hurry and reserve your spot now!

Q: What is Global Nomads Group?
A: Global Nomads Group (GNG) is an educational non-profit organization with the mission of fostering dialogue and understanding among the world's youth. The organization was founded in 1998. Never heard of GNG before? Learn more about us.

Q: I still have some questions, can someone help me?
